In their recent artistic practice, both Kallem and Smith explore variations on a theme by setting idiosyncratic rules for their respective work. Within these personal parameters, abstracted compositions of form and color emerge. Matthew Smith combines the conventions of abstract painting with traditional quilting techniques, thereby examining the the visual intersection between abstraction and craft. Becca Kallem pairs painterly marks with sharper edges and x-es, in iterations that are sometimes minimal, sometimes complex. Both artists' works evince an interest in materiality, the nature of painting, and how to make and break one's own rules.
Kallem and Smith are members of AAC's Residency Program.
