dia de los muertos

on view: November 4 - December 18, 2016

celebration and opening: Nov 4, 6 - 8 pm

On the Lower Level in the Jenkins Community Gallery, AAC presents its annual Dia de los Muertos exhibition featuring contemporary artists from the Mid-Atlantic Region who are using the vocabulary, traditions, materials, and symbolism related to Dia de los Muertos celebrations.

More about celebrating life than remembering death, this special day encourages us to connect with loved ones while reflecting on the ties that bind past to present.

Along with the opening of this exhibition, we'll also have a huge party featuring hot chocolate and pan de muerto, ballet folklorico, music, La Tingeria food truck, face painting, and drop-in workshops for all ages.

This year our altar is dedicated to Mexican singer and songwriter Juan Gabriel who died in August - guests are invited to bring items to add to the ofrenda to help welcome Juan Gabriel to our celebration.

“Mourning was not allowed because it was believed the tears would make the spirits path treacherous and slippery. This day is a joyous occasion; it’s a time to gather with everyone in your family, those alive and those dead.”
