pam rogers: working the ground
on view: January 21 - March 26, 2017
reception & open studios: Feb 11, 6 - 9 pm
On the Upper Level in the Wyatt Resident Artists Gallery, AAC presents Working the Ground, a solo exhibition by AAC Resident Artist Pam Rogers.
Working the Ground explores the relationship between humanity and the natural world where nature is challenged, contorted, filtered, and reborn.
Landscape and botanical forms inspire the work and are layered with Rogers’ personal relationships, events, and experiences. Natural elements help locate the viewer and create a sense of beauty integral to the work.
However, the viewer is challenged to question a more unsettling subtext that lurks beneath. The work takes on a persona of botanical-inspired magic realism forcing the exploration of personal relationships and events in an alternative context.
Included in Working the Ground, are conceptually based works on paper as well as sculptural installations that are created from locally sourced plants, as well as plant, mineral, and soil pigments made by the artist.
Both the materials and her process create a direct connection between events, relationships, and places. In examining the relationship between people, plants, and place, the strings of art and agriculture, myth and magic, healing and hurting are woven into an inquisitive whole that calls us to look at the germination of a sustainable future both individually and collectively.
